What is the management plan in effect for this area?
Rancho Lobos' Master Plan envisions the cyclical exploitation of Saguaro ribs over long cycles. Dead Saguaros can be harvested in cycles up to 30 years depending on the average age of the population.
Cactus wood and skeleton yields are expected over an area of more than 19,000 Hectares with an average of 9 dead saguaros per hectare, yielding 5 to 6 usable skeletons per hectare.
Wood processing and extraction is programmed over the entire area, extracting Only dead/fallen cacti. With an authorized extraction rate for Saguaro ribs yielding over 4,941 cubic meters over a minimum of 4 years, and an extraction rate for Cholla skeleton yielding over 3,136 cubic meters over a minimum of 2 years.
Saguaro Rib production
Saguaro ribs are shipped worldwide to clients in 50 rib bales, with 6' ribs of varied diameters in shipments of at least 5 bales min. Please contact us at Rancho Lobos to place your order or, if you are a new client, to request a quote.
To ensure the protection of the environment, only the main roads of the Ranch are used to extract the ribs. Actual cutting and transportation to the main roads is done on foot. The cut saguaros are then loaded on to a pick-up truck and taken to a work area by the Ranch's Hacienda, where it is hand separated and selected to be cut into 6 ft. long ribs and tied in 50 rib bales.
Choya Skeleton Production
Cholla skeletons are harvested in a variety of sizes and shapes. They are shipped according to customer requirements in 20 arm packages, with 3' arms of varied diameters in shipments of at least 20 packages min. Complete skeletons are also sent per unit to clients that require the whole skeleton. Please contact us at Rancho Lobos to place your order or, if you are a new client, to request a quote.
As Saguaro ribs, Chollas are collected on foot to the main roads and transported to a working area by the Ranch's Hacienda, where they are pealed and selected by size.
The selected Cholla arms and trunks are then cut in to 1 to 3 ft. long segments and submerged in a Calcium Chlorine solution to bring out the natural colors and destroy all parasites.
